September is Down at the Box Office. Is There a Silver Lining in October?

August 2022’s box office receipts came in better than the same month of 2021 by nearly $50,000,000 USD, but September is looking like a much slower month at just $276,000,000 USD with just a few days remaining. That’s nearly $90,000,000 USD less than the same month in 2021 thanks in large part to a non-exciting list of new theatrical releases.

The Woman King topped the month’s box office at $36,158,000 with Barbarian in second place at $28,465,000. Don’t Worry Darling ($19,353,000), Bullet Train ($19,217,000), and Top Gun: Maverick ($18,761,000) rounded out the month’s Top 5.

Top Gun: Maverick has currently grossed more than $711,624,000 domestically, and $1,471,824 worldwide since its release in late May.

The 2022 re-release of Avatar has grossed more than $10,000 in its first week of release, which is a lead in for the super-hyped sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, one of the most anticipated releases in recent memory, scheduled for release on December 16.

As we begin to enter the holiday season, October releases such as Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson), Ticket to Paradise (George Clooney, Julia Roberts), and Halloween Ends (Jamie Lee Curtis) will look to fill September’s void.

See you at the movies!
